Utrecht

If you’re heading to the Netherlands on vacation, and would like to experience some non-touristy sights, try Utrecht. Utrecht is only 20 minutes from Amsterdam by train, and is also known as “The Green City” because of its parks, trees, and lovely canals. Utrecht is a bit like a mini-Amsterdam, but many argue that Utrecht’s canals are even more beautiful. Here’s three stops you won’t want to miss on your trip to Utrecht.

Right in the heart of Utrecht’s city center is a beautiful old church tower called Dom Tower. It’s the highest church tower in the Netherlands at just over 112 meters, and it provides sweeping views of the city of Utrecht below. You’ll experience absolutely breathtaking panorama views of the city, and surrounding countryside on top of Dom Tower. Keep in mind that you can only visit the top of the tower with a guide. Tickets can be purchased at the Information Office at Dom Tower. Guides speak English and Dutch, and information sheets in other languages are available upon request.

Take a boat cruise through Utrecht’s beautiful canals

Utrecht

Rederij Schuttevaer is one company in Utrecht that provides boat trips through the city’s canals. This company has been in operation for more than 50 years, and will give you lots of historical facts about the city as the cruise through its waterways. These boats are glass-top boats, which means you can enjoy the cruise even in the wintertime.

Go on a luminous night walk through the city. Utrecht’s Trajectum Lumen is a walk for after-dark that takes you through many of the city’s luminous locations. Many renowned light artists have installations throughout Utrecht that make an evening stroll very enjoyable with artistically lit buildings, canals, and art. You can even download an interactive app for your walk, or get a free map at the Tourist information Office in Utrecht.
